Summary
[edit]Description2-Bay Sangar - Sandbag revetment around the entrance (51001923650).jpg |
A sangar with two loopholes set below the horizon of the elevated ground that the airbase is constructed on, but a mile or so away from the camp itself. Construction is similar to the concrete blocks of the 3-bay sangar, but the roof has not been cast as a slab on top of the walls, but has been contained within the walls. The quality of the roof concrete however is very poor and a large hole has appeared, exposing the steel reinforcing grid that has been used during construction. Some of this steel is protruding beyond the width of the walls, suggesting that perhaps a roof slab was intended, but not constructed, or that the internal formwork slipped down during the pour and the overhang was not achieved. There is also no evidence of additional earth protection on the roof - although this may have been removed at a later date if the roof structure had been weakened. Green and black camouflage paint can be seen on the external walls. ============The airbase at RAF Mount Pleasant was announced in 1983 and subsequently opened in 1985 primarily as a fighter airbase on the Falkland Islands. Following the conflict in 1982 a small airbase was located at the only existing hard runway on the islands 27 miles wast at Port Stanley (RAF Stanley). As part of this military installation in what was a recent conflict zone, it was necessary to construct a number of field defences to ensure the security and protection of the airbase. It is likely these were constructed in the early days of the construction of the airfield and formed part of the defensive plan. The examples I have selected to record are beyond the current perimeter of the airbase and located immediately beside the civilian road. They all appear in a poor state of repair and I have assumed they are no longer maintained. They likely still form part of the outer line of field defences. |
