Title
1st century terret
Description
English: Complete cast, copper alloy harness terret. This terret has a hoop that is subcircular in plan and section with a rectangular loop. It has an external diameter of 33.72mm, an internal diameter of 19.8mm and is 41.5mm long from the top of the loop. The width of the circular hoop is 7.2mm and it is 7.2mm thick. Circumstances of recording did not allow for a weight to be taken. The terret is plain. The original surface of the terret survives with an even mid green patina. Where it is damaged, the metal shows as a brighter, light green. It is generally in good condition. A similar terret can be seen in MacGregor, 1976, Early Celtic Art in Northern Britain, number 59. Terrets of this design date from the very late Iron Age into the Early Roman period, so this fitting is likely to have a 1st century date.
