Title
1st century Roman brooch side view
Description
English: Fragment of copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece type brooch. One semicylindrical wing on this fragment is entirely missing, whilst the other is complete at a length of 6.4mm. The wing is plain. Behind the head is a lug pierced with two circular perforations. The top of the lug has broken away so that the top piercing is now open on the topside. The spring coil and pin shafts are entirely missing. Running from the head onto the bow is a clearly defined crest. The bow is damaged and truncated and is semicircular in section with a very slight taper. It is decorated with a central incised line that runs from the crest, and which presumably ran its full length. The foot of the brooch and catchplate are missing. The original surface remains and the brooch has an even mid green patina with some patches of shiny bronze (the brooch has been treated since discovery). All breaks are worn smooth and similarly patinated, suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The brooch has a surviving length of 24.76mm, is 4.76mm across the bow, is 2.8mm thick and weighs 2.20g. Brooches of this type date from between 50-70AD. A more complete example can be seen in Crummy 1983, figure 6, number 52.
