English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece type brooch. Both wings are complete, semicylindrical and plain. Behind the head is a lug pierced with two circular perforations, both of which are blocked with fragments of the spring coil and chord. Apart from these two tiny fragments, the spring coil and pin shafts are entirely missing. Running from the head of the brooch onto the bow is a well-moulded crest with a notch at its very top. The crest extends into a moulded centrally raised line that runs the length of the bow. This raised line is flanked to either side by a stepped raised line, with a further step between these lines and the bottom of the bow. The bow is complete, triangular in section due to the stepped decoration and tapers to a point, ending without a foot knob. The curled catchplate is complete and has a trefoil shaped perforation. The original surface of the brooch is intact and has a yellowy green patina with some patches of shiny bronze (the brooch has been treated since discovery). The brooch has a surviving length of 53.24mm, is 19.88mm wide across the wings, is 8.02mm wide across the bow, is 3mm thick and weighs 7.56g. This type of brooch dates from 50-70AD.
