Title
1st century Roman brooch
Description
English: Incomplete copper alloy Romano-British ‘Colchester’ two piece type brooch. One wing of this brooch is complete, semicylindrical and plain with a length of 5.42mm. The other wing is severely truncated and is little more than a lug on the other side. Behind the head is a lug pierced with two circular perforations. The lower part of the lug is damaged so that the lower perforation is open on one side. The spring coil and pin shafts are entirely missing. Running from the head onto the bow is a well-moulded crest that runs well beyond halfway along the bow. To either side of the crest is an incised zig zag line. The bow is incomplete, tapering and is semicircular in section. Aside from the continuation of the crest, it is undecorated. The original surface remains and has an even mid green patina (the brooch has been treated since discovery). The brooch has a surviving length of 27.42mm, is 5.26mm wide across the bow, is 2.34mm thick and weighs 2.06g. Brooches of this type date from between 50-70AD. An example can be seen in Crummy 1983, figure 6, number 52.
