Description

Australian War Memorial caption : Members of the Australian 1st Division Pioneers digging out a gun belonging to the 104 Howitzer Battalion (sic. presumably this should be 104 (Howitzer) Battery) which was trying to haul their gun forward after the advance near Hannebeek, in the Ypres Sector.

Identified are :

  • Sergeant (Sgt) J Howell (leaning on a shovel, behind the Howitzer, second from the left)
  • Private Sadler, (centre foreground beside the Howitzer's wheel)
  • Sgt Pallbrook (standing behind Sadler)
  • Lieutenant McCullagh (or O'Toole) (extreme right smoking pipe)

Comment : The gun is a QF 4.5 inch Howitzer.
