Description

One of the dragon walls that separate different areas of the gardens.

The Yuyuan Gardens were founded by the Pan family, rich Ming-dynasty figures. The original gardens were created from 1559 to 1577, becoming the largest and most prestigious of its era in Shanghai. They were bombarded in 1842 during the Opium War, trashed a decade or so later during the Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864), and then damaged again by the Japanese in 1942. They were restored from 1956 to 1961 when they were then opened to the public. The gardens were declared a national monument in 1982. They cover 2 hectares/5 acres.
