| Description |
The Peace Hotel was built by Sir Victor Sassoon, a British Sephardic Jew of Iraqi origin whose family had businesses in Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Calcutta (Kolkata). Completed in 1929, the Art Deco building was one of the first skyscrapers—thirteen stories plus a copper-clad pyramid roof adding about 10m/33ft— in the Eastern Hemisphere and the tallest building (83m/272ft) in Shanghai until 1934. The upper floors were originally the Cathay Hotel plus a penthouse residence for Victor Sassoon. The Communist takeover in 1949 saw a shift to government offices before the Peace Hotel opened in 1956. The Peace Hotel has a prime location on The Bund (rhymes with ‘fund’), the “Wall St.” of colonial Shanghai, as it is at the corner of the major shopping street of East Nanjing Road.
