KW5350 This street is an absolute goldmine - so far this year, I have seen and photographed three vehicles of interest - and there's a teal MkIV Cortina 3 door estate that appears from time to time, as well as a red Porsche 944! The only problem is that it is lined with huge trees, which cast annoying shadows over my photos. This was a bit rough around the edges, but who cares? It's a MKV Cortina - any is better than none. The Cortina continued in production here in NZ in CKD (completely knocked down) form at Ford's Lower Hutt plant until the end of 1983 - this one was registered in March of that year. It was hugely popular here, especially with fleet buyers. A unique option, offered under guarantee by a dealership, South Auckland Ford, was a turbocharger! The Cortina sedan was replaced by the badge-engineered Ford Telstar (a Mazda 626 in drag) in 1983, and the wagon was replaced by the Sierra estate, which was assembled locally from 1984 until Ford brought in a Telstar estate in 1987 with the MkII Telstar range. Compared with Britain and many other countries where the Cortina was originally exported, in New Zealand it has a far superior survival rate due to the climate being far drier and more favourable to the preservation of rust-free classic cars. It is not uncommon to see examples in everyday use, especially in New Zealand's rural areas, and obtaining spare parts to keep them on the roads is yet to become a significant problem. |
