Summary

[edit]
Description

The UK designed Cortina was built from 1962-82. The 1976-79 Mk IV Cortina, or TE as it is known in Australia, got an all new European looking body, now very similar to the sister car, the European Ford Taunus. In 1979, the Mk IV or TE got a facelift, the last of the Cortinas, the Mk V or the TF as it was known in Australia, it got a wider slatted grille, revised headlights, larger slatted tail lights, flatter roof and slimmer C pillar. Models available in the UK were; Base, L, GL and Ghia. Cortinas were also assembled in New Zealand from 1962-82. Cortinas built in Australia, not only got the 2.0 litre 4 cyl Pinto, but also the Ford Falcon's 3.3 and 4.1 6 cyl engines. Models there were also L, GL and Ghia, the S pac option on the GL; sports wheels, stiffer suspension and the bright 'S' side stripes. Also built in South Africa, Cortinas were available with 2.5 or 3.0 V6 Essex engines. From July 1971, a pick-up version was built there (known as the bakkie), this remained in production after the Cortina was replaced by the Sierra. The Cortina pick-up was exported to the UK, in a lengthened wheelbase form, as the Ford P100 until 1988
