Summary

[edit]
Description

England / NZ. Morris merged with Austin in 1952 to form BMC (British Motor Corporation). Then in 1968 merged with Leyland to become British Leyland Motor Corporation. BMC's small car was the Mini, built in the UK and the Mk I built in Australia as well. The square nose Mini Clubman was available in England from 1969-1980, it sold along side the original round nose Mini. The Clubman offered better crash safety, were better equipped, but they were more expensive and aerodynamically inferior. A 1275 GT Clubman was sold along side the round nose Cooper S. Minis were also made in Australia. The Mk I round nose Mini was produced in Australia from 1959-70, then replaced by the Mini Clubman.

In the UK, the Clubman was based on the Mk III (internal door hinges) In Australia, the Clubman was based on the Mk I (external door hinges). Named the Morris Mini Clubman until 1973 and then the Leyland Mini. Available in Australia in 1970, was the Clubman, in 2 door Saloon and for Australia only, a Van. The sports model introduced in 1972 was the Clubman GT (Cooper S running gear), replaced by the Leyland Mini S in 1974. To use up the last of the Mini bodies in 1978, 810 of the limited edition 1275 LS were produced either in Nugget Gold or Hi Ho Silver.
