The XD Falcon got a completely new body, a boxy European design rather than curvy American lines of the earlier years, the grille and square headlights similar to Europes Ford Granada. But it was stll an XC Falcon underneath with same floorpan and suspension. The new top of the line; Fairmont Ghia got alloy wheels, velour upholstery and full electrics Built from March 1979- March 1982 In 1980, the XD got an upgrade; alloy head and electronic ignition. Identified with Alloy head badges on the front guards. Also the sporty ESP was introduced;1st based on the GL, then the Ghia; . Engines; 3.3 and 4.1 6s or 4.9 and 5.8 V8s Sedan; GL, Fairmont, Fairmont Ghia and ESP Wagon; GL or Fairmont Ute; Standard or GL Van; Standard or GL The ESP, this car a 5.8 V8 (also 4.1 6 cyl available) got 15 in Globe wheels, fog lamps, front spoiler, Scheel seats,LSD,4WDiscs and Bilstien shocks. Ford sneaked one back in, at the Bathurst James Hardie 1000 in 1981, in the middle of many years dominated by Holden, driven by Dick Johnson and John French. |
