Description
English: William Allen High School - Gym Allentown PA

This photo postcard shows the gymnasium facilities at the William Allen High School Athletic Center. Built between 1971 and 1973, it was first used by the WAHS Class of '74. It is also the home of several interscholastic and intramural sports teams.

The gym is now known as the J. Milo Sewards Gymnasium, in honor of the school's former men's varsity basketball coach. Coach Sewards coached for 24 seasons and went 408-167 with nine East Penn League and four District 11 crowns. His Canaries won the 1950 state championship in his first season in charge. Sewards was a 1934 graduate of Allentown High School.

The basketball court was named after John Donmoyer. Coach Donmoyer succeeded Sewards as coach in 1974 and was head basketball coach 23 seasons. He compiled a record of 423-226 from 1974-1997. During his tenure the Canaries won five East Penn Conference championships, six District 11 titles and won the PIAA state championship in consecutive seasons (1979-80). He was a 1957 graduate of Allentown High School.

The current head basketball coach, Doug Snyder, succeeded Donmoyer in 1998. He is a 1974 graduate of William Allen and played basketball under both Sewards and Donmoyer. Since becoming only the fourth head men's basketball coach in the school's history, Coach Snyder's teams have won three District 11 4A championships and competed in four PIAA state tournaments. He also teaches advanced placement U.S. history and economics.

The gym remains in use today both for girls and boys gym classes and interscholastic and intramural sports.
