Description 1972 Chrysler VH Valiant Charger 770 SE (E55). Released in 1972, the 770 SE was a limited edition model in the VH Charger range that was powered by the 340 cubic inch version of the Chrysler LA series V8. The popular story is that Chrysler Australia supposedly imported these engines to build a special run of 340 V8 powered R/T's for Bathurst in 1972, however after a motoring magazine article scare campaign the big three manufacturers were forced to drop their high performance images. As a result Chrysler were left with 340 V8s that they had to do something with. They detuned them and fitted them to the Charger 770 in a Special Edition available in three colours, Vintage Red like this one, Limelight, and Sunfire Yellow. All were fitted with the console shift Torqueflite automatic, and marketed as a luxury coupe. The SE also came with the white vinyl side panel, black and white interior trim and machine turned metal finish dash and console inserts. A number of left over 340 V8s also made it into the VJ series. Today they are most commonly known as E55 Chargers, after the E55 engine code for the 340 V8. Only about 125 were produced.
