Description
English: Morton Sher was an educator in the Allentown School District. He last taught English at William Allen High School, retiring at the end of the 1979-1980 school year.

Sher was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1915. He received his bachelor's degree from Muhlenburg College and a master's degree from Lehigh University, attending both schools simultaneously. At Lehigh, he took a course in Victorian Literature Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays while simultaneously attending Muhlenburg. In 1937, he began teaching in the Coplay School District. He later transferred to the Allentown School District. Sher taught at Harrison-Morton Junior High School initially, then transferring to Central Jr. High School as an English, Latin and Literature teacher.

Morton Sher was the first Allentown school teacher to enlist in the Army in April, 1942 for service in World War II. During his military service, he was a rifleman. A man of modest stature, 5ft 4inches, 140 pounds, he also was an Army physical education instructor, teaching judo at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He deployed to France in 1944 as a combat infantryman, and was awarded four Bronze Stars for meritorious actions during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He later served in the Army of Occupation in Germany, being an orientation instructor for Army forces. He was discharged as a Sergent with four campaign stars in late 1945.

He returned to Allentown High School as a teacher in 1946, teaching various English and Latin Courses. He also taught English for vocational students, and was a coach for several sports teams in swimming and also tennis. He also participated in track and field in the Pennsylvania Junior Olympics.

He retired from teaching at William Allen High School in 1980 and was a strong supporter of Allen's sports teams for many years afterwards. He passed in October, 2000.
