The Volkswagen Type 3 was built from 1961-73, the Type 3 was the third body shape produced by VW, Type 1 was the Beetle and Type 2 was the Kombi. It was still an air cooled, rear engine, rear wheel drive car. Originally available as a 2 door Notchback, Followed in 1962 by the Estate (or Squareback) The Fastback, or TL version arrived in 1965, at the same time the 1600 engine was introduced. Volkswagen's intention was that this model should replace the Notchback, which is what happened in the UK market, but in other markets, including the German domestic market, the number of customers preferring the older Notchback shaped car was higher than foreseen, and in the end both Notchback and Fastback body shapes remained in production until July 1973 In 1970, it got a facelift, the nose was lengthened and engine increased to 1600cc.
