Description

The Escort replaced the Anglia in 1968 and the Mk I was built until 1974 It featured the coke bottle waistline and dog bone shaped grille. Built in England and assembled in Australia and NZ. Performance models built at the Aveley Plant were, Twin Cam, Mexico, RS1600 and RS2000. all had strengthened bodies and sports suspension.

The Twin Cam (with Lotus improved Kent engine) was the 1st then replaced by the RS1600 (with 16 valve Cosworth head and BDA drive), the RS2000 with 2.0 litre Pinto engine was more civilised car than the RS1600, but also used for rallying, the Mexico was aimed more for road use. The 1600GT was a twin cam Escort sold in Australia
