| Description |
The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring car manufactured by Mercedes since 1954 spanning through six generations. The designation SL derives from the German Sportlich-Leicht, (English: Sport Lightweight). The SL designation was first applied to the 300 SL, often referred to as the 'Gullwing' due to its gullwing or upward-opening doors. The 230SL W113 Roadster replaced the 190SL W121 Roadster in 1963. It featured a low waistline and big curved greenhouse windows, and a Coupe Roadster with detachable hardtop, whose distinctive roofline earned the nickname 'pagoda top.' In 1967 the engine size was increased to 2500cc, now the 250SL and then again in 1968 to 2800cc, the 280SL. The 250SL also got an updated interior and the 230 SL's separate centre hub caps and wheel trim rings became full wheel covers. The 350SL R107 replaced the 230SL W113 in 1971 |
