Description1969 Hyundai (Ford) 20M 현대 20M.jpg |
Hyundai Business Group was a late entrant to the automotive industry, establishing Hyundai Motor Company only in 1967 and commencing production in 1968. However, Hyundai was well prepared thanks to its ample capital, made possible by Hyundai's successes in construction and shipbuilding. This was the luxury offering from Hyundai: Ford Taunus 20M (not to be confused with Ford Taurus#. Hyundai partnered with Ford of Europe for its initial models; the Cortina was the midsize car/taxicab offering. The 20M, competing with the Shinjin-built Toyota Crown, proved its worth in 1970, when the Seoul-Busan Expressway opened and it was able to take advantage of the 100 km/h allowed speed easily. Hyundai built 2,406 examples of the 20M between 1969 and 1973. South Korea was still a poor Third World country and demand for luxury cars was negligible. |
