1969 AEC MBA-Type bus No.MBA582 of London Transport at the London Transport Acton Depot Museum, 25 September 2021. It is in in Red Arrow livery and was in service from 1969 to 1981. The Red Arrow services linked central London main line stations and in the mid-1970’s I used daily the Route 507 bus from both Victoria and Waterloo, depending on where I was living at the time, to commute to my office in Westminster. Even though a short journey, it was not a pleasant commute. The AEC MB and SM-Types and sub-types were based on the AEC Merlin and (slightly shorter) Swift chassis of 1964 with a various bodies from several coach builders. 1,500 of the MB and SM types were built for LT in 1966-72 in a several sub-types, each type tailored for different services. The MBA was specifically designed for LT’s Red Arrow fast, limited-stop, OMO services introduced in Central London in 1968 with two doors, a large amount of standing space, but few seats, and coin-operated turnstile (later replaced by a box to drop fares in). The Merlins/Swifts of all sorts proved extremely unpopular with customers and very unreliable in the testing conditions they worked in whilst their construction proved unsuitable for the frequent rebuilding/refurbishment practices of LT. Scrapping began in 1972, barely after the last had been delivered to LT/London Country, some buses being only 4 years old. The last LT MBA was withdrawn in 1981. Some Merlins/Swifts were sold new to provincial operators and during LT’s disposal process many more were sold to them at knock down prices, the last somehow lasting until 1995. |
