Summary

[edit]
Description

The UK designed Cortina was built from 1962-82, the Mark 1, from 1962-66 was reasonably priced, cheap to run and proved to be very successful in motorsport. There were 2 main variations of the Mk 1 Cortina, the first was known as the 'pre airflow' Mk 1, it had elliptical front indicators. The facelift in 1964, the 'airflow' model, got new squarer parkers and new flow through ventilation (eyeball vents in another new dash and vents in the outer rear pillars). 2 and 4 door models were available and a 4 door estate. 1200 or 1500cc, Standard, Deluxe, Super and GT. Mark 1 Cortinas were also built in Australia, varying slightly in badging and interior trim. Lotus developed a Mk I for racing duties, built in England, all were 2 door cars and all were white with a green flash. The engine 115E 105bhp 1588cc alloy twin overhead cam Kent. The Lotus Cortina also got a close ratio gearbox, quarter bumpers on the front, unique seats, unique dash and Lotus badging.

The early cars also had lightweight alloy door, boot and bonnet panels, battery in the boot, drastically altered suspension; shorter struts at the front and coils and struts at the rear. In 1964 panels were back to standard Cortina and in 1965 suspension was back to standard GT leaves.
