Summary

[edit]
Description

1965 RCL Type ‘Routemaster’ coach No.RCL2229 of London Transport’s Green Line at the London Transport Acton Depot Museum, 25 September 2021. The first prototype Routemaster appeared in 1954 followed by two more and an experimental RMC Green Line coach in 1957, all designed by AAM Durrant, C Curtis and D Scott of London Transport.

The first production Routemasters appeared in 1959 and production continued until 1968. A total of 2,876 were built in a variety of versions of which two were for LT’s Green Line (though later downgraded to London Country service): the short RMC with rear doors, larger engine, higher standard seating, luggage racks, twin headlights and other detail differences, 68 of which were built in 1962. This type was followed by the lengthened RCL version with front entrance doors, 43 of which were built in 1965. After service with Green Line and London Country, RCL2229 was converted by LT to driver training and then to a LT Central Area red bus, being was finally withdrawn in 1984.
