È stato un centrocampista elegante, con una grande visione di gioco e un'ottima tecnica. Gianni Brera, uno dei più grandi giornalisti sportivi italiani, lo soprannominò "l'Abatino", per sottolineare quanto fosse bello vederlo giocare, nonostante le sue discrete doti fisiche e atletiche.
