The Hillman Minx was sold under the UK Rootes group, from 1932-70, there was also badge-engineered versions which were sold under the Humber, Singer, and Sunbeam marques The Hillman Minx was the first British car assembled in Australia. Rootes Australia started assembling the Minx in 1946. The new shape Hillman Minx replaced the 1945-57 Mk I - Mk VIII Minx, they started again with Series I, not only a more modern shape but it got a new 1390cc OHV engine, which grew in size with the Series III (1494) and the Series VI (1725) There were up market Singer Gazelle and 2 door Sunbeam Rapier variants of all these Hillman Minx models. Some models were re-badged in certain markets, with the Sunbeam and Humber marques used for some exports, e.g. the New Zealand Humber 80. The Series V, VI Hillman Minx and the Hillman Gazelle were the last of this shape, replaced by the Arrow and Hunter in 1967 The Series V was very similar to the Series VI, the Series VI got a linear speedo (Series V round) and the new 1725 cc engine (1725 badge behind front wheel arch) The Hillman Gazelle got the Rapiers 91hp alloy head engine, walnut dash a different grille. |
