Summary

[edit]
Description

The Bentley S1, introduced in 1955, replaced the R Type, it got a completely new external appearance, longer and lower, although with the traditional radiator grille. The S1 was updated in 1959 with the S2, the old L series 6 cyl replaced with an aluminium V8, a new dash and steering wheel. The next update was in 1962 with the S3, similar mechanically, but visually the S3 got the twin headlights, a slightly lower bonnet line and individual front seats As with the Bentleys, only the grille and badging differed from the Rolls-Royce, with the S3, the Silver Cloud III. Again, the S3 was available in 4 door Saloon and the coach built high performance S3 Continental fixed head and drop head Coupes. In 1959, Rolls Royce acquired coach builders H.J.Mulliner and Park Ward, they were merged to form Mulliner Park Ward. Most S3 Continentals were built by MPW. The most prominent visual difference from the S2 Continental was the four canted headlights. 291 S3 Continentals were built by Mulliner Park Ward (Canted headlights), 20 by James Young (Saloon headlights)
