Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Fifth and Hamilton Streets seen from the new Allentown City Hall in June 1964 on the day the building was being dedicated. Note the William Allen High School Band on Hamilton ready to march to the new building. The new Lehigh Valley Courthouse, next to the City Hall, is close to completion, and will open later in 1964.

Across Hamilton Street on the south side is the Ainey Mansion at the Southeast corner of Fifth Street. It was torn down in 1966. The seven-story Commonwealth building is next door, along with the rebuilt Eastern Light building. The Eastern Light building was originally a six-story building built in 1900. In 1962 it was destroyed by fire and replaced by a smaller two-story structure. A major fire caused extensive damage to the Commonwealth Building on November 24, 1975. The top three floors were removed and the building was gutted, followed by a complete reconstruction into a modern-style office building.

In the background the steeple of Zions's Church and the large Americus Hotel.
