Description

The Hillman Motor Car Company was established in 1907. In 1928, was taken over by Humber and in 1931, the Rootes Group. The last Hillman rolled of the production line in 1967, when the Rootes Group was taken over by the Chrysler Corporation. The Hillman Minx was sold from 1932-70, there was also badge-engineered versions which were sold under the Humber, Singer, and Sunbeam marques. The new shape Hillman Minx replaced the 1945-57 Mk I - Mk VIII Minx. They started again with Series I in 1956, not only a more modern shape but it got a new 1390cc OHV engine, the grille had vertical bars, overlaid with one horizontal bar. The 1957 Series II got a more elaborate grille The 1958 Series III new concave grille, larger 1494cc engine. The 1959 Series IIIA grille updated with added centre piece The 1959 Series IIIB; alloy version of the chrome grille of the IIIA. The 1960 Series IIIC got a larger 1592cc engine (1600 on the door) The 1963 Series V (no IV) lower, squarer look, flatter grille The 1965 Series VI, larger 1725cc (badge on guard), new fascia There were up market Singer Gazelle and 2 door Sunbeam Rapier variants of all these Hillman Minx models.

Some models were re-badged in certain markets, with the Sunbeam and Humber marques used for some exports, e.g. the New Zealand Humber 80. The Hillman Minx was the first British car assembled in Australia, assembled there from 1946-67.
