| Description |
Like the Lincoln and Mercury, the Edsel was based on the Ford. It was supposed to slot in between the base Fords and the upper market Mercury. Introduced in 1958, they were only produced until 1960, styling was supposed to be well ahead of the time, but the public thought they were ugly and did not sell well at all. For 1958, tall central grille, flagged by two separated horizontal grilles, dual headlights above. Seven models available; the larger Mercury-based Citation and Corsair, the smaller Ford-based Pacer and Ranger and three wagons; base 4 door Villager, upmarket Bermuda (with wood panelling) and the 2 door Roundup. Engines; 303hp 400 or 345hp 475 V8s For 1959, tall central grille now connected to side horizontal grilles, headlights now within the grille. Only three models available, the Corsair, Ranger and Villager. Engines; 145hp 223 6 cyl. 200hp 292, 225hp 332, 303hp 361 V8s For 1960, tall central grille gone, an egg crate grille with an hourglass shaped central divider.
