The Chevrolet Motor Company was formed in 1911. The 1959 Chevrolet got a new chassis and new styling, it was even lower and wider than 1958, a GM economy move was bodyshells were shared with Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac. The 1959 Chev's tail fins extending outward rather than upward, looking like flat wings and unique to this year; cats eye tail lights. Models for 59; The Delray was dropped, the base model now the Biscayne (side trim half the length of the car), in 2 or 4 door Sedans and Brookwood Wagon. Mid spec was now the Bel Air (side trim full length of the car); 2 or 4 door Sedans, 2 or 4 door Hardtops and 4 door Parkwood Wagon. The Impala, now a separate model, the top; (more elaborate side trim); 2 door Hardtop Sport Coupe, Convertible, 4 door Sedan, Hardtop Sport Sedan and Nomad Wagon. Also available in Bel Air trim was the El Camino Coupe Utility. The C1 Corvette Sports Car available too Chevrolets were also produced in Australia by General Motors Holden from 1926-68, In 1959, only the 4 door Sedan was sold there, along side the 4 door Pontiac Laurentian Sedan. Engines; 145hp 235 cu in 6 cyl, 185, 230 or 250hp 283 cu in V8 (250hp was fuel injected) and 280, 300 or 315hp 348 cu in V8 |
