The Ford Zephyr, replacing the Ford V8 Pilot, was built in the UK from 1950-72 through four generations (also assembled in NZ). The 1951-56 Mk I Zephyr (EOTTA), was a rounded, slab sided car, a similar shape as the 1949-51 US Fords. The 1956-62 Mk II Zephyr (206E), a slightly larger car and a bit more shapely with small tail fins, similar to the US Tbirds and Fairlanes. The 1962-66 Mk III Zephyr (211E 4 cyl and 213E 6cyl) A unique shape with concave grille and more prominent tail fins. The 1966-72 Mk IV Zephyr/Zodiac (3012E/3022E) boxy shape, long bonnet, short boot, like the Mustangs and the Falcons of the time. With the Mk I and Mk II, the Zephyr was the mid spec model of the three-model range, comprising the base 4 cyl Consul, the 6 cyl Zephyr, and upmarket Zodiac. The front clip of the Zephyr/Zodiac was 4 inches longer than the 4 cyl Consul. Most Mk II Zephyrs were 4 door Sedans, a few Estates and Convertibles were made by independent coach builders. 1959 saw a few updates to the MK II, the roofline was lowered, the grille from eggcrate to horizontal bars and a new instrument cluster. The upmarket Zodiac's, grille was different again, also more elaborate tail end styling, two tone paint and gold badges. The Mk II was also built in Australia. Sedans and a coupe utility were produced, their station wagons differed from the UK estates by having a wind-up rear window and a straight C pillar. New Zealand assembly of the Mark II, from CKD kits, now included the Zodiac (only Consul and Zephyr Mk I)
