| Description |
The Mk I Jaguar was built from 1955-59, available first the 112hp 2.4 and from 1957, the 210hp 3.4. It was Jaguars first small saloon, since the 1949 1.5 and 1.5 litre cars. Although having a family resemblance to the larger Mark VII, the Mark I differed in many ways. It was the first Jaguar with unitary construction of body and chassis, it also got new suspension. The car was available in standard or special equipment versions with the former lacking a tachometer, heater, windscreen washers, fog lights and cigarette lighter. Both versions did however have leather upholstery and polished walnut trim. The replacement 1959-67 Mk II was re-engineered above the waistline, slender front pillars allowed a wider windscreen and the rear window almost wrapped around to the enlarged side windows now with the familiar Jaguar D-shape above the back door and fully chromed frames for all the side windows.
