The Land Rover Series I, II, and III (commonly referred to as 'Series' Land Rovers, to distinguish them from later models) were four wheel drive off-road vehicles produced by the British manufacturer Rover. The Rover Company Limited produced automobiles from 1901-67, when they were taken over by Leyland Motors, became British Leyland in 1978 and the Rover Group in 1986 The Series I was built from 1948-57. Originally only available in 80 inch wheelbase, leaf suspension, permanent 4WD and 50hp 1600cc petrol. Tops of the doors and a roof were optional extras on these first Land Rovers. In 1950, the lights moved from a position behind the grille to protruding through the grille, now selectable two or four-wheel drive system 1952; Larger 2000cc engine 1954; Wheelbase was increased by 6 in, now available with full doors and a roof, better 'spread bore' engine, Pickup available 1955; 107 in wheelbase 5 door station wagon introduced (86 inch wheelbase was a 3 door) Double skin Safari roof available. 1956; Wheelbases increased to 88 and 109 inches 1957; 52hp 2000cc Diesel engine available Series Land Rovers were also built in Australia from CKD Kits. |
