| Description |
Edsel Ford introduced the Mercury in 1939 as a model to fill the gap between the basic Ford, and the luxury Lincoln. From 1950-55 the Monterey was Mercurys top model. In 1955, the Custom was still the base model, available in 2 or 4 door Sedan, 2 door Hardtop Coupe and 4 door Wagon. Mid spec was the Monterey, in 2 door hardtop and 4 door Sedan or Wagon. The new top model was the Montclair, 4 door Sedan, 2 door Convertible or 2 door hardtop Coupe (also Plexiglass roof Sun Valley option) The 1955-56 first generation Montclair got the forward look with canted headlights, extra chrome trim and special two tone paint. 1957 saw the second generation, a lower and longer car with a shapely front bumper, convex grille and single headlights. The Montclair was pushed down to mid spec, with the introduction of the new top model, the Turnpike Cruiser 1958 brought quad headlamps, as well as new engine: the 383 cu in MEL V8. The Montclair dropped again in 1958, the Turnpike Cruiser mid spec and top was now the Park Lane. Available in 2 door Coupe or Convertible or 4 door Sedan. Engine; 285hp 312 cu in Y block V8 |
