Purchased by Leyland Motors in 1960, which became British Leyland in 1968. The Standard Vanguard replaced the Standard Fourteen, the Phase I was built from 1947-53. The styling of the car resembled the pre-war Plymouth with a sloping beetle-back. Available in Saloon, Estate and the Australian Utility. Standard Cars were also built in Australia by Eclipse Motors of Melbourne from CKD kits. By the end of the War, the Standard 8, Vanguard, Spacemaster and the Triumph Mayflower were built there. Eclipse Motors became the Standard Motor Company in 1952 and from 1958; Australian Motor Industries (AMI) The Australian assembled Phase I had vinyl seats instead of leather and no door arm rests.
