Summary

[edit]
Description

1935 AEC RF-Type bus No.RF537 of London Transport at the London Transport Acton Depot Museum, 25 September 2021. Originally a Country Area/London Country green bus, it was later a Central Area red bus and was in service from 1952 to 1977.

The AEC RF-Type was based on the AEC Regal IV chassis with Metro-Cammell bodywork. The Regal IV was AEC’s first mainstream underfloor-engined vehicle. The prototype for LT appeared in 1949 and production followed in 1952.

Between 1952-53 no less than 700 of the RF-Type were built for LT’s Central Area, Country Area, Green Line (all later being demoted to Central Area or Country Area/London Country buses) and private hire fleets in bus and coach versions. They remained in normal service until 1979, although a few lasted a few years longer in non-service use. The RF’s proved a very reliable and adaptable design that proved hard for LT to replace, several successor designs proving problematical.

AEC was successful in selling the Regal IV to many UK and foreign operators and over 2,600 were built until 1955 for the UK market and until the 1960’s for foreign markets.
