Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 1950 Bristol Tramways & Carriage Co. LL 6G chassis with Portsmouth Aviation DP36R dual purpose coach/bus body and a Gardner 6LW 6-cylinder 8.4 litre diesel engine, in the livery of Hants & Dorset Motor Services, Reg.KLJ749, fleet No.779, at the Bristol Bus Show, Brislington, 28 July 2024.

KLJ749 was one of a pair of dual purpose coach/buses built for Hants & Dorset in 1950 and their first 30’ long coaches, which was their initial use. She was downgraded to service bus use in 1954 and withdrawn from regular service in 1965. She was then sold to Atomic Power Constructors (yes, really) at Dungeness who used her until 1970 when she was sold to a fruit farm in Kent. She was bought for preservation in 1983 in very dilapidated condition.

The Bristol L series was first produced in 1937 as a 27’6”x7’6” single-decker and the first single-decker designed by Bristol which only had diesel engines, their petrol engines having been discontinued the year before. In 1946 a longer version, the 30’ LL appeared, initially for export only but from 1950 for the domestic market as well. Similarly there was a wider (8’) version of the LL produced, the LWL, for export only until 1950 when it could be sold in the UK as well.
