DKW was founded in 1916, it was one of four companies that merged to form Auto Union in 1932. DKW cars were made from 1928 until 1966, apart from an interruption caused by the Second World War. DKWs always used two-stroke engines, reflecting the company's position by the end of the 1920s as the world's largest producer of motorcycles. Models F1 to F8 (F for Front) were built between 1931 and 1942, with successor models reappearing after the end of the war in 1945. They were the first volume production cars in Europe with front wheel drive, and were powered by transversely mounted two-cylinder two-stroke engines. Base model was the Reichsklasse, upmarket, the Meisterklasse The 1931-32 DKW F1 had a 584cc 2 stroke engine The 1932-34 DKW F2, longer and more elegant body, 692cc The 1934-35 DKW F4, new body again, sloping rear The 1935-36 DKW F5, steel frame replaces timber The 1937-38 DKW F7; 2 door cabriolet now available The 1939-42 DKW F8; shorter but longer wheelbase After the war the car reappeared in 1949 as the IFA F8, until 1955: in addition to the sedan and cabriolet bodies, various additional body types available post war included a delivery van and estate variant. . |
