English: A 1938 postcard photo of the 500 Block of Hamilton Street looking west.
On the north (right) side is the earliest postcard photo of the Colonial Theater, built in 1919/1920. It is showing the Clark Gable film, "Boy Meets Girl" which was released on August 27, 1938. Moving west along the north side of the street are some storefronts and the former Allentown Trust building at 527 Hamilton on the NE corner of Law Street. The Allentown Trust was an early 20th Century bank that failed in 1931 during the Great Depression. It was seized by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and was then used for many years afterwards as offices for Lehigh County. The large four-story Styles Building is visible on the NW corner of Law and Hamilton. It was a large stationary and book store on the ground floor, with professional offices on the 2d through 4th floor. On the south (left) side is the Commonwealth Building at 512 Hamilton. |
