Description

The Railton was an English car built from 1933-40. The first car was made by fitting a body made by coachbuilder John Charles Ranalah to a 4010 cc, 100 bhp, 8-cylinder Hudson Terraplane chassis. In 1935 the original Terraplane chassis was replaced by the one from the Hudson Eight, the engine grew to 4168 cc producing 113 bhp and a wider range of bodies from several coachbuilders were on offer The South African Grand Prix was first run as a Grand Prix motor racing handicap race in 1934 at the Prince George Circuit at East London, Eastern Cape Province. It was a 23.4 km circuit that ran through the streets of coastal East London. World War II brought an end to the race, but it was revived in 1960 as part of the Formula One circuit.
