Description

1934 AEC STL Type (Short Type Lengthened) Bus No.ST469 of London Transport at the London Transport Acton Depot Museum, 25 September 2021.

The STL Type was the last design produced by the London General Omnibus Co. before incorporation into London Transport (1933), which restyled it somewhat. It was the first bus with modern levels of standardisation and 2,600 were produced until 1939, becoming the most common London bus in the 1930's and 1940's. Some were allocated to London Country Buses and painted green.

AEC produced the prototype chassis of its Regent I Srs.663 in 1929 for the LGOC who designated it the ST Type (Short Type). An improved, longer version of the Regent I followed in 1932, designated STL (Short Type Lengthened) by LGOC. Most had wooden-framed bodies produced by LGOC/LT's Chiswick Works but some were bodied by Park Royal with aluminium frames which suffered serious corrosion and had to be rebodied by LT with wooden frames. The STL's were withdrawn in the 1950's although some were sold to other companies for a few more years.
