These marks indicate the route of submarine KXIII during a voyage to measure gravity. The route intentionally makes several perpendicular passes across the Sumatra / Java Trench. The strong negative anomalies measured helped Vening Meinesz and later Harry Hess confirm the theory of seafloor spreading and plate tectonics.
