English: Retired Streetcars Provide Shelter After Tragic Forest Fire
In late September 1922, a forest fire swept through 18 townships in Northern Ontario and left 11,000 people homeless. The TTC was able to provide temporary housing for some of the victims in the form of 85 donated streetcars. The approach of winter made the need for housing urgent, and the retired streetcars were just what was needed. The car bodies had been stored at Coxwell Yard waiting to be scrapped for parts until they were shipped to the mining community of Haileybury, ON. |
