Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Trinket box, enamelled on copper, decorated by hand, depicting the 1920 Antwerp's Olympic Games official poster, which featured the Discus Thrower by Mathieu Kessels (1784–1836) set against the skyline of the City of Antwerp.

The poster was created by Martha Van Kuyck (1881-1978) to illustrate the cover-page of the dossier of candidacy of Antwerp to the 1920 Olympic Games, entitled ː Aurons-nous la VIIe Olympiade à Anvers en 1920 ?, and submitted to the International Olympic Committee in 1914.

That design is based on the bronze cast in 1862 by the Compagnie des Bronzes, Brussels, and exhibited in front of the Academy Place, Brussels : ► https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brussels,_Discobole.jpg

Departing from the original 1914 design, the banderole was rearranged after WWI : the German, Austrian and Hungarian flags were removed, and priority was given to the American, Belgian, French, Greek, and British ones.

Other bronze exemplar of same Discus Thrower, cast in 1948 : ► https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Houffalize_%E2%80%93_Le_Discobole,_Mathieu_Kessels.jpg
