Title
1913 Medieval strap end.jpg
Description
English: Copper alloy composite three-piece strap end. The attachment end is rectangular with a shaped end,

The strap was attached via a forked spacer onto which sheet copper alloy plates are soldered on the top and bottom. The bottom plate is undecorated, and the top plate has cross-hatched decoration covering the surface; each of the diamonds thus formed has a short line in the centre, and all is held within a linear border.

In the centre of the object is a lozenge, again with a sheet copper alloy plate soldered on to the top and bottom. As with the rectangular part, it is decorated with cross-hatching, with short lines in the centre of each diamond on top and undecorated on the underside.

The forward end consists of a moulded animal head. Its ears are pressed against the two forward sides of the lozenge, the head is triangular in plan with hollowed cheeks, the eyes are narrow ovals and the top of the head has a series of lines that represent fur. The mouth is slightly expanded and there is a vertical plate projecting from the mouth. The artefact is in an excellent condition retaining all of its original rich green patina. Length 50mm, width 16mm, thickness 17mm, weight 8.97g.

This strap-end is of interest in that it is shaped exactly like a book clasp, but lacks both the hole in the base to fit over a peg and the hole through the terminal to help in unfastening the clasp. Compare NMS-2D8BB6, SOMDOR-A28111, NMS-A63866 etc.

Fingerlin dates strap-ends of this type to the second half of the 14th century (1971,111, nos.174-8).
