Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is one of four Gage tractor biplanes known to have been built and is usually referred to as the ‘Fowler-Gage’ biplane, in recognition of its owner, Robert Fowler. Having previously completed a transcontinental U.S. flight in a different machine, he used the Gage for exhibitions and competitions before fitting it with floats and taking it to Panama. He then carried out the first ‘Ocean to Ocean’ flight across Panama on 27th April 1913. The flight took 1 hour 45 minutes and covered 52 miles, with no available landing opportunities en-route. Reconverted to a landplane and returned to the United States, Fowler then carried out various tasks with the Gage, including flying Christmas mail to Sacramento and performing power line inspections between Sacramento and Oroville. It was retired from flying in 1915 and was donated to the Smithsonian Institute by Fowler himself in 1950.

It was restored in 1988 and is seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
