Summary
[edit]Description1912 Benoist Type XII ‘No32’.jpg |
English: The Benoist Type XII was one of the first enclosed-fuselage tractor aeroplanes built in the United States. It is thought that at least five were produced, one of which was on floats and carried out a 1,973 mile flight down the Missouri and Mississippi rivers in December 1912.
This example was built in the Benoist workshop by Edward and Milton Korn and is referred to by the Smithsonian as the Benoist-Korn Type XII. It first flew in May 1912 and carried out exhibition flights until it crashed near Montra, Ohio, on 13th August 1913. Milton Korn sadly died five days later from his injuries and the aeroplane was put in store. It was rebuilt by manual arts students in 1918, but many alterations were made and it was not flown. In 1949 it was donated to the Smithsonian Institute by Edward Korn and was restored to original 1912 condition in 1981. Unfortunately, the rubberised finish applied during restoration has oxidised over time and the aeroplane is now brown instead of an almost white natural linen colour. Seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia 7th May 2015 |
