Title |
18th to 19th century multifoil flat fleuret mount |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy multifoil, flat fleuret mount with single stud or tack of modern date. The mount has a central domed pellet that has a diameter of 5.34mm. It is unclear whether the stud/tack is integral or not. If the stud/tack is not integral it would seem likely that this central detail is the rivet like head and that the shank passes through the rest of the mount to the reverse. The tapering shank has a rectangular cross-section and measures 2.79mm x 1.73mm. The upper surface of the mount is decorated with twelve petals each formed and boarded by raised ridges 0.96mm. Each petal contains a row of small raised pellets down the centre increasing slightly in size towards the edge of the mount. Along the outer edge of approximately three of the petals is a scalloped plain flat border. It is unclear whether this plain flattened boarder was intended and has since broken away from most of the petals due to later damage or whether this is a result of manufacture and that the artefact was lost or discarded prior to work on the mount being completed. The surface decoration can be seen in reverse on the underside of the mount which indicates that the artefact was machine punched which is a method of manufacture introduced in the 19th century. The mount weighs 1.75g, has an approximate diameter of 20.59mm and is 0.73mm thick. The mount is likely to have been mounted onto a leather belt, strap or harness to provide decoration. This object dates from the 19th century to present day. Similar examples can be seen in Read, B. 2001, (p.33 & 34, fig.18 & 19, item 261, 270 & 272). |
