Lord Wellington's Residence at Brussels, 1815

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On April 5, 1815, the Duke of Wellington arrived in Brussels from Vienna. He settled down in a mansion provided by Mr Van den Cruyce, Rue Royale, n°54, overlooking the Parc de Bruxelles / Warandepark / Brussels Park. The house was large enough to be used as headquarter for the impending confrontation, as well as residence – for a few weeks.

The day after the victorious Battle of Waterloo, at dawn, Lord Wellington returned to Brussels to finalize his famous Waterloo Dispatch (File:18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – The Waterloo Despatch.jpg) he had begun to write in the middle of the night while still at is temporary headquarter at Waterloo (File:18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – Duke of Wellington's Headquarter.jpg).

The next day, June 20, Lord Wellington was already in Nivelles :

Then, over Malplaquet, Cambrai, Péronne, &c., reached Paris which the French emperor had already fled.
On July 7th, 1815, the Allied and Prussian Armies would enter Paris.
The long napoléonic era, characterized all over Europe by endless wars, lootings and ruins, and a death tally beyond evaluation, was drawing to an end.

In June 1815, Europe was about to return to peace – for a century.
