Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Befreiungskriege (War of Liberation) are commemorated by monuments assuming the unmistakable silhouette of the Tabernakel created in 1817 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841) to mark the important stages of the downfall of Napoleone Buonaparte (1769-1821) in Eastern Europe :

Berlin Kreuzberg ►(File:Berlin,_Kreuzberg_Denkmal.jpg),
Großgörschen,
(Chojnów, PL, destroyed in 1945),
Großbeeren,
Wahlstatt (Legnickie Pole, PL, destroyed in 1945),
Arbesau (Varvažov, CK),
Dennewitz,
and here, at Plancenoit (Lasne, Battle of Waterloo).

At the time of the construction, 1817-1818, this angle was the favourite point of view, showing the undulating plain of the battlefield and its first monuments, as several etchings of that time attest, e.g. ► (File:18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – To the Prussian Army, ca. 1830.jpg). The railing was added after the degradations of 1832 ►(File:18 June 1815 – Victory at Waterloo – To the Prussian Army, Protective fence.jpg).

Since mid-20th c., the site is hidden behind a thicker and thicker curtain of trees.
