Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ninth and Hamilton Streets looking east about 1891. Note the early electric streetlamp at the intersection and the utility pole on the north side of Hamilton Street. This appears to be a wintertime photo, as the snow has been pushed into piles in the middle of Hamilton, leaving a west and eastbound lane for horse and carriage traffic. About the middle of the block, in the dark brick building with the double facade is the Brown Bear Hotel. This would be taken over by the larger Grand Central Hotel, built to the left of those buildings. In 1896 Max and Charles Hess would open their dry goods store at the Grand Central Hotel. The older buildings would later become Mc Crory Five and Ten stores, later H. L. Green, which would remain in buisness well into the 1980s until the closure of Hess's.
